ピクニック - The picnic

Okay, the weather is nice today. Or at least, as I write these lines, the sun is shining. It is a good occasion to go for a picnic. Or maybe you prefer to take a motorhome to scour the roads, have an outdoor barbecue or whatever?

In this vocabulary course, we are going to talk about picnics, barbecue, towels, food and other odds and ends. Twenty-six vocabulary words in total. Remember that you have previous courses vocabulary about food and drink which I strongly recommend you review.

So much for this course. It only remains for me to make a few remarks on a few words.

To begin with, in the word 籐(の)バスケット, the particle の is in parentheses because it is not mandatory. We have already seen in the course on the particle の that it could be omitted in order to simplify words. I do not tell you more for the moment but already know that I will delve into this subject much later towards the end of season two.

Then, concerning the pear pie, the word 梨パイ . なしパイ is the most common.

Finally, a small remark on the following words:

市松模様のタオル . いちまつモヨウのタオル . the checkered towel

縞模様のタオル . しまモヨウのタオル . the striped towel

Here are two fairly long words in Japanese. You will have recognized the word タオル which comes from the English "towel". For this, well, you have to memorize them.

市松 . いちまつ means "the checkered pattern" and 模様. モヨウ means "the aspect, the pattern".

The kanji 縞 . しま means "the stripe" and we find it in the word 縞馬 . しまうま which means "the zebra", literally "the striped horse". Therefore 縞模様 . しまモヨウ means "the striped horse".

All this having been explained, I am going to give you a little exercise to do. How do you think "the checkered t-shirt", "the striped t-shirt" or "the checkered shirt" and "the striped shirt"? Ditto for the pants. Think about this for a moment before reading below. Good ? Here are the answers:

You now see all the new words you can use. I clearly will not be able to use all of this vocabulary in the example sentences and exercises but learn them. It’s very important.
